The Pender County Schools Board of Education approved the appointment of Carrie Armstrong as principal of Penderlea School effective June 22, 2016 during a special Board meeting.

Armstrong currently serves as principal of Seventy Fourth Street Elementary School in St. Petersburg, Fla. A graduate of Swansboro High School and a former UNCW student, she is excited to return to Southeastern North Carolina.

“Running a K-8 has been a dream of mine,” she said. “I have a passion for both grade spans and a vision of how well students and staff can work together through all of those years. In the K-8 setting you can see how critical primary literacy skills are and build upon those skills through the middle grades.”

Armstrong earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. She has experience as a school administrator at both the elementary and middle school levels. She has also served as a curriculum specialist, reading coach and teacher.

Armstrong said she is looking forward to meeting the staff, students and community of Penderlea. “I’m excited about building on the community and family feel they have there,” she said. “I’ve been told how family-oriented Penderlea is and how engrained the school is in the community.  I’m excited to become a part of that.”

Pender County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Terri Cobb, said she is thrilled Armstrong chose Pender County Schools. “She will be an asset to the district and the community,” Dr. Cobb said. “She is familiar with the Penderlea community and brings an understanding of literacy, K-8 curriculum, and the importance of maintaining a positive environment.”

School staff will host a meet-and-greet community event for parents, students and staff to get to know Armstrong in June.
