Governor Beverly Perdue launched the Career and College Promise Initiative designed to help all students graduate from high school ready to succeed at a two- or four-year institution or in a career. The Initiative was scheduled to begin in spring 2012.
Seeking to fulfill the requirements of the Governor’s initiative, Pender County Schools’ district administrators presented a modified high school calendar to the Pender County Board of Education in December, 2011.
The Pender County Board of Education approved the calendar and authorized the district to proceed with submitting a waiver to the State Board of Education. The Department of Public Instruction informed the school district on Thursday, March 1 the waiver was granted for the 2012-2013 school year only.
The Pender County Board of Education and staff will engage in discussions to review the feasibility of all options. The high school calendar change is still under review. While the calendar waiver can now be considered among options, the Board of Education will select the initiative that best addresses the Career and College Promise and meets the needs of students and the community. If the decision involves utilizing the waiver granted by the State Board of Education, the Board will look for ways to seek additional input.
